Throughout my career, I have been on hand for many newsworthy local events. Some of the most memorable are the return of Iranian hostage Rocky Sickmann in 1981, the Cardinals becoming world champs in 1982, (and losing to the Royals in 1985), and the floods of 1993. However, it was that long week 10 years ago that has been recalled in recent news. I’m referring to the week that St. Louis lost broadcaster Jack Buck and Cardinal’s pitcher Darryl Kile. Jack’s death expected, Darryl’s without warning.
As has been the case all too often, I was there to produce the memorial pool feeds for the local and national media. After reading Bernie Miklasz’s remembrances in the Post-Dispatch, I went digging for the master tapes of those feeds. From that footage, Brad has put together excerpts of each service, as you would have seen it on TV.
2002 was also a tough year personally. My father (at 84 years old) had a stroke from which he never recovered, and my mother died suddenly at age 72, just before the year was up. Now here we are a decade later, remembering.
