The history of Kaufman Broadcast goes back to 1982, when Bill Kaufman showed up in his Aunt’s driveway with a second hand satellite dish and an entrepreneurial spirit. The company was founded later that year and, as they say, the rest is history. Over the past 30 years, Kaufman has grown from a small, family-run business into a nationally-known, trusted organization that provides the highest quality services for clients all over the world.
A self-declared “dabbler,” Bill has been involved in every aspect of the broadcasting business. In the early years of Kaufman, Bill was both President and Chief Engineer, travelling around the region doing satellite downlinks. While his time is now mostly consumed with upper management work, you’ll still see Bill laying cables and occasionally running one of the satellite trucks.
During baseball season, you’ll find Bill at Busch Stadium where Kaufman manages broadcast services for the St. Louis Cardinals. From troubleshooting issues in the control room to holding the boom mike at press conferences, Bill is always ready to do whatever is needed. Bill even sports 2006 and 2011 World Series Rings, a recognition from the Cardinals of his tireless work for the organization.
Despite his busy schedule, Bill is involved in a number of other St. Louis organizations. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Gateway Festival Orchestra and is a donor to Gateway and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Bill has also served on the boards of the University City Children’s Center and BSKI Synagogue. Throughout the history of Kaufman Broadcast, Bill has donated his time and experience to nonprofit organizations such as the Greater St. Louis Book Fair and Heat Up St. Louis.
One of Bill’s ongoing pet projects is the care of the historic searchlight atop the University City city hall. The searchlight is over 100 years old, and Bill has been its sole operator and caretaker for the past 40 years.
